Mary Anne Hodgson was born on 13 Aug 1834 at Hebden Bridge, Halifax, Yorkshire, England.

She was the daughter of James Hodgson and Sally\Sarah Gill.

She was christened on 10 Oct 1875 at Estcourt, Colony of Natal.

She married John Whipp on 4 Apr 1857 at St Paul's Church, Durban, Colony of Natal, South Eastern Africa. John was the son of Samuel Whipp and Hannah Blackburn. He was born about 1823. He died on 2 Jun 1883 at Newcastle, Natal, South Africa.

They had 11 children: Sarah Anne Whipp, Mary Elizabeth Whipp, William Whipp, Thomas Hodgson Whipp, Harry Whipp, Louisa Whipp, Alice Whipp, Charles Samuel Whipp, Robert John Whipp, Whipp and Florence Whipp.

She died on 7 Sep 1898 at Newcastle, Natal, South Africa at the age of 64.
