James Hodgson was born on 4 Mar 1808 at Heptonstall, Yorkshire, England.

He was the son of John Hodgson and Grace Cockcroft.

He married Sally\Sarah Gill on 22 Dec 1829 at St John the Baptist, Halifax, Yorkshire, England. Sally\Sarah was the daughter of William Gill and Hannah Sunderland. She was born about 1810. She died on 28 Dec 1884.

They had 5 children: John Hodgson, William Hodgson, Mary Anne Hodgson, Helen Hodgson and Thomas Akroyd Hodgson.

He died on 30 Jun 1872 at the age of 64.

He was buried in 1872 at Anglican Church Cemetery, Commercial Road, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa.
