John Whipp was born about 1823.

He was the son of Samuel Whipp and Hannah Blackburn.

He married Mary Anne Hodgson on 4 Apr 1857 at St Paul's Church, Durban, Colony of Natal, South Eastern Africa. Mary Anne was the daughter of James Hodgson and Sally\Sarah Gill. She was born on 13 Aug 1834 at Hebden Bridge, Halifax, Yorkshire, England. She died on 7 Sep 1898 at Newcastle, Natal, South Africa at the age of 64.
