Helena Maria Glaeser was born on 8 Feb 1868 at Worcester, Cape Colony.

She was the daughter of Louis William Glaeser and Wilhelmina Elizabeth le Sueur.

She was christened on 1 Mar 1868 at Lutheran Church, Cape Town, South Africa.

She married Harold Gabriel Knowles on 12 May 1887 at Cape Town, Cape, South Africa. Harold Gabriel was the son of John Knowles and Jane Cape. He was born on 5 Aug 1858 at Sculcoates, North Ferriby, East Yorkshire, England. He died on 3 Aug 1918 at 137 Sixth Avenue, Durban, Natal, South Africa at the age of 59.

They had 6 children: Gladys Vera Knowles, John Oscar Douglas (Chappie) Knowles, Harold Eric (Bay) Knowles, Muriel (Baby) Knowles, Lionel Leonard (Tommy) Knowles and Helena Phyllis Knowles.
