John Oscar Douglas (Chappie) Knowles was born on 20 Oct 1889 at Johannesburg, Transvaal.

He was the son of Harold Gabriel Knowles and Helena Maria Glaeser.

He was christened on 8 Apr 1893 at St Cyprian Church, Durban, Colony of Natal.

He married Margaret (Sissy) Hagens on 22 Jul 1925 at Durban, Natal, South Africa. Margaret (Sissy) was the daughter of William Hagens and Mary Miller Robertson. She was born on 16 Feb 1901 at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland. She died on 20 Oct 1985 at Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa at the age of 84.

They had 2 children: Hylton Knowles and Colin William Knowles.

He died on 4 Jul 1967 at 17 Forest Hill, St Thomas Road, Durban, Natal, South Africa at the age of 77.
