Richard Donaldson was born on 1 Feb 1855 at Moeraki, North Otago, New Zealand.

He was the son of Josiah James (Joseph) Donaldson and Susan Russell.

He married Margaret Theresa Murphy on 1 Nov 1877 at Otapopho Hill, North Otago, New Zealand. She was born in 1859 at Limerick, Ireland. She died on 1 Aug 1942 at Oamaru, New Zealand.

They had one child: George Joseph Donaldson.

He died on 6 Jul 1927 at the age of 72.
