John (James) Russell was born in 1805.

He married Tete Mereana Teite. Tete Mereana was the daughter of Pahi and Piki. She was born in 1811 at Paihia, Southland, New Zealand. She died on 23 Apr 1852 at Moeraki, North Otago, New Zealand.

They had one child: Susan Russell.

He died on 11 Nov 1833 at Foveaux Strait, New Zealand.
