Biography
Duncan Henry Barrett was born on 21 Apr 1918 at Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa.
He was the son of Benjamin Hugh Barrett and Isabella Sanderson (Bella) Munro.
He was christened on 23 Aug 1918 at St George's Church, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa.
He immigrated from Durban, South Africa to Southampton, England on 19 May 1939.
He was recorded in the census in 29 Sep 1939 at 17 Handel Street, St Pancras, London, England.
He became engaged to Marian Marshall.
He died on 29 Aug 1941 at Holland at the age of 23.
He was buried at Nes, Ameland Island, Holland.

Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, Duncan
went to England to fulfill his dream to become a pilot in
the RAF. He became a Sergeant Pilot in the 49th Squadron,
Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Tragically on 29 August 1941, on his 11th mission, Duncan's plane was shot down, during a raid over Holland and plummeted into the shallow water near Ameland, killing the entire crew. The islanders rowed out to the wreck and brought the bodies back for burial. The initial grave for the crew is shown on the left. The bodies were re-interred after the war to new graves, by the War Graves Commission, and Duncan's permanent gravestone is shown on the right.
