Johannes Swellengrebel was born on 17 May 1671 at Moscow, Russia.

He was the son of Henrick Swellengrebel and Elisabeth Fadenrecht.

He married Johanna Cruse on 28 Jun 1699 at Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope. Johanna was the daughter of Hieronimus Cruse and Aletta (Aaltje) Elberts van Nieuwenhuys. She was born on 5 Feb 1682 at Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope. She died on 19 May 1713 at Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope at the age of 31.

They had 7 children: Hendrik Swellengrebel, Aletta Swellengrebel, Hieronimus Swellengrebel, Elisabeth Swellengrebel, Johannes Balthazar Swellengrebel, Regina Maria Swellengrebel and Johanna Catharina Swellengrebel.

He married Christina Stants on 3 Dec 1713 at Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope. She was born in 1666 at Giesendam, Holland. She died in 1726 at Cape.

He married Engela Ten Damme on 19 Sep 1728 at Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope. Engela Ten was the daughter of Willem Ten Damme and Helena Gulix. She was born on 17 Apr 1683 at Cape. She died on 26 Dec 1733 at the age of 50.
