Alastair Alexander Troup was born on 25 May 1924 at Nairobi, Kenya.

He was the son of William Troup and Sophia Lesley Smith Cowie.

He married Joyce Naomi Elizabeth Mullen on 31 Jan 1954 at Masaka, Uganda. Joyce Naomi Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel Anthony Mullen and Mary Eileen Blanche de Courcey. She was born on 22 Mar 1929 at Jhansi, India. She died on 23 May 2000 at Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa at the age of 71.

They had one child: Living.

He died on 6 Oct 1998 at Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa at the age of 74.
