Joyce Naomi Elizabeth Mullen was born on 22 Mar 1929 at Jhansi, India.

She was the daughter of Samuel Anthony Mullen and Mary Eileen Blanche de Courcey.

She married Alastair Alexander Troup on 31 Jan 1954 at Masaka, Uganda. Alastair Alexander was the son of William Troup and Sophia Lesley Smith Cowie. He was born on 25 May 1924 at Nairobi, Kenya. He died on 6 Oct 1998 at Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa at the age of 74.

They had one child: Living.
