Jan Christiaan Smuts was born on 24 May 1870 at Bovenplaats, Riebeeck West, Cape Colony.

He was the son of Jacobus Abraham Smuts and Catharina Philippina Gerhardina de Vries.

He married Sybella Margaretha Isabella (Issie) Krige. She was born on 22 Dec 1870 at Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa. She died on 25 Feb 1954 at Doornkloof, Irene, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 83.

He died on 11 Sep 1950 at Doornkloof, Irene, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 80.
