Michiel Smuts was born on 22 Apr 1813.
He was the son of Michiel Nicolaas Smuts and Maria Magdalena van der van der Byl.

He married Adriana Martha van Aarde on 13 May 1838 at Swartland, Malmsbury Cape of Good Hope.
They had one child: Jacobus Abraham Smuts.
He died on 2 Oct 1853 at the age of 40.
