Biography

Jacobus Abraham Smuts was born on 16 Apr 1845.

He was the son of Michiel Smuts and Adriana Martha van Aarde.

He married Catharina Philippina Gerhardina de Vries. Catharina Philippina Gerhardina was the daughter of Jan Christiaan de Vries and Maria Magdelena Philippina Niehaus. She was born on 7 May 1845 at Worcester, Cape of Good Hope. She died on 13 Feb 1901 at Klipfontein, Moorreesburg, Cape of Good Hope at the age of 55.

They had one child: Jan Christiaan Smuts.

He died on 25 Aug 1914 at Riebeek-Wes, Malmesbury, Cape Province, South Africa at the age of 69.
