He was the son of Benjamin Hugh Barrett and Isabella Sanderson (Bella) Munro.

He married Jeanie Adam on 1 Jun 1946 at Frere Road Presbyterian Church, Durban, Natal, South Africa. Jeanie was the daughter of William Adam and Helen Muirhead. She was born on 26 Jun 1914 at Pinetown, Natal, South Africa. She died on 10 Feb 1989 at Pinetown, Natal, South Africa at the age of 74.

He immigrated from Wellington, New Zealand, aboard S.S. Himalaya on 24 Mar 1968.
