James Allison was born on 4 Jul 1802 at Carlisle, Cumberland, England.

He was the son of James Allison and Ann Maxwell.

He married Dorothy Thackwray on 4 Jan 1827 at Grahamstown, Albany, Cape Colony. Dorothy was the daughter of William Thackwray. She was born in 1804. She died on 23 Jun 1866.

He married Mary McCarthney Rae on 20 Jan 1868 at Groot Hoek, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. She was born about 1841 at Raefield, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. She died on 18 Jul 1897 at Sanatorium, Chelmsford Road, Durban, Natal Colony.

They had 3 children: Thackeray James Allison, Maxwell Francis Allison and Dora Agnes Allison.

His occupation was Wesleyan Missionary.

He died on 1 Apr 1875 at 1 Loop Street, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa at the age of 72.
