Mary McCarthney Rae was born about 1841 at Raefield, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

She was also known as Mary McCarthy born Rae formerly Dunn.

She married James Allison on 20 Jan 1868 at Groot Hoek, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. James was the son of James Allison and Ann Maxwell. He was born on 4 Jul 1802 at Carlisle, Cumberland, England. He died on 1 Apr 1875 at 1 Loop Street, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa at the age of 72.

They had 3 children: Thackeray James Allison, Maxwell Francis Allison and Dora Agnes Allison.

She married Robert Dunn.

They had 2 children: Maggie Jane Dunn and William Allison Dunn.

She died on 18 Jul 1897 at Sanatorium, Chelmsford Road, Durban, Natal Colony.

She was buried at Wesleyan Cemetery, Commercial Road, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa.
