Dorothy Amy Hughes was born on 13 May 1895.

She was the daughter of Ernest North Hughes and Ada Ellen Williams.

She married Charles Albert Browne on 9 Feb 1920 at St Peter's Church, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa. Charles Albert was the son of Frederick Henry Browne and Eliza Wicks. He was born on 14 Oct 1889 at Deal, Kent, England. He died on 26 Aug 1972 at 5 Holman St., Harding, Natal South Africa at the age of 82.

They had 3 children: Muriel Ada Browne, Neville Arthur Browne and Gwen Ida Browne.
