He was the son of David John McMaster and Mary Ann Allison.

He married Mary Ellen Cameron on 2 Aug 1902 at Thaba 'Nchu, Orange Free State, South Africa. Mary Ellen was the daughter of James (Jim) Cameron and Elizabeth Johanna du Plooy. She was born on 3 Aug 1870 at Thaba 'Nchu, Orange Free State, South Africa. She died on 25 May 1932 at Woodbridge, Thaba 'Nchu, Orange Free State, South Africa at the age of 61.

They had 4 children: Elizabeth Agnes Margaret McMaster, Mary Louise McMaster, Stewart James McMaster and Colin Cameron McMaster.
