Biography

John (Black John, Hone Kere) Geary was born on 5 May 1848 at Portobello, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.

He was the son of William (Snr) Geary and Etahi Taitapu (Tatupai) (Elizabeth) Poripoki.

He married Annie Hughes on 18 Mar 1873 at Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. She was born in 1846 at Castle Crevan, County, Galway, Ireland. She died on 26 May 1884 at Portobello, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.

They had one child: Martin Geary.

He died on 15 Jul 1930 at Seacliff Mental Asylum, Dunedin, New Zealand at the age of 82.
