Joseph William McMaster was born on 15 Aug 1841 at Somerset East, Cape Colony.

He was the son of David John James McMaster and Jane Margaret Pinchin Webber.

He married Annie Jane Fraser on 26 Jan 1865 at Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa. She was born on 6 Jun 1846 at Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa. She died on 26 Jan 1877 at Hoopstad, Orange Free State, South Africa at the age of 30.

They had one child: Alfred Clarence McMaster.

He married Christina Maria de Bruyn on 27 Oct 1879 at Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa. She was born on 13 Jul 1860 at Riversdale, Cape Colony, South Africa. She died on 7 Aug 1942 at Bethlehem, Orange Free State, South Africa at the age of 82.

They had 3 children: Levina Jessie McMaster, David Frederik McMaster and Jiena Stella McMaster.
