David McMaster was born in 1785 at Terregles, Kirkudbrightshire, Scotland.

He was the son of John McMaster and Janet Miller.

He married Frances Nicols.

They had one child: David John James McMaster.

He married Amelia Sandford on 3 Mar 1825 at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England. She was born in 1794. She died on 15 Nov 1860 at Port Elizabeth, Cape Colony.

He died on 31 Dec 1851 at Somerset East, Cape Colony.
