Lavinia Julia McMaster was born on 5 May 1835 at Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

She was the daughter of David John James McMaster and Jane Margaret Pinchin Webber.

She married William Best on 9 Oct 1856 at Queenstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. He was born on 27 Apr 1828 at Canterbury, Kent, England. He died on 19 Feb 1880 at Boshof, Free State, South Africa at the age of 51.

She died on 5 Jul 1889 at Christiana, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 54.
