He married Lavinia Julia McMaster on 9 Oct 1856 at Queenstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Lavinia Julia was the daughter of David John James McMaster and Jane Margaret Pinchin Webber. She was born on 5 May 1835 at Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. She died on 5 Jul 1889 at Christiana, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 54.

He died on 19 Feb 1880 at Boshof, Free State, South Africa at the age of 51.
