Joseph Frederick Schonnberg Foster was born on 19 Mar 1821 at Clanwilliam, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.

He was the son of John Foster and Mary Kent.

He married Maria Charlotte Shawe on 16 Jun 1845 at Zeekoevlei, Cape of Good Hope, South Africa. Maria Charlotte was the daughter of Samuel Edward Shawe and Ann Daniel. She was born on 13 Sep 1827 at Cape of Good Hope. She died on 8 May 1907 at Cape of Good Hope at the age of 79.

They had one child: George Charles Stanley Foster.

He died on 3 Jul 1863 at the age of 42.
