William Adriaan van der Bijl was born on 5 Aug 1855 at Tygerberg, Cape, South Africa.

He was the son of Willem Adriaan van der Bijl and Maria Anna Sophia Hopley.

He married Angelique Maria Adelaide van der Bijl on 9 Nov 1887. Angelique Maria Adelaide was the daughter of Philip Daniel Johannes van der Byl and Helena Maria Geertruyda le Sueur. She was born on 21 Jun 1869 at Worcester, Cape, South Africa. She died on 23 Mar 1920 at Wynberg, Cape, South Africa at the age of 50.

He died on 15 Feb 1897 at the age of 41.
