He was the son of Evert van Dyk and Maria Elizabeth Baartman.

He was christened on 29 May 1794.

He married Helena Catharina Tredoux on 4 Apr 1813 at Cape Town. Helena Catharina was the daughter of Jacques Gideon Tredoux and Maria Dorothea De Nicker.

They had one child: Evert Johannes van Dyk.
