Francis James Diack was born on 13 May 1856 at St Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

He was the son of Alexander Diack and Agnes Ellis.

He married Johanna Petronella Scholz on 3 Mar 1881 at Scottish Church, Cape Town, Cape Colony. Johanna Petronella was the daughter of Thomas Talbot Harrington Scholz and Theodosia Maria Wentzel. She died on 10 Jan 1887 at 33 Plein Street, Cape Town, Cape Colony.

They had 2 children: Alexander Ellis Diack and Agnes Marie Diack.

He married Margaretha Jacoba van der Riet on 1 Jun 1887 at Scottish Church, Cape Town, Cape Colony. Margaretha Jacoba was the daughter of Gysbertus Johannes van der Riet and Johanna Lijdia Thuynsma. She died on 17 Feb 1896 at 3 Primrose Street, Cape Town, Cape Colony.

They had one child: Francis Gysbertus Diack.

He died on 3 Feb 1890 at Vernon Terrace, Cape Town, Cape Colony at the age of 33.

He was buried in 1890 at St Peters Cemetery, Observatory, Cape Town, Cape Colony.
