Johanna Catherine Paterson was born in 1887 at Otepopo, Otago, New Zealand.

She was the daughter of John William Paterson and Johanna Catharina Diehl.

She married William Richard Lavell on 26 Sep 1917 at Presbyterian Church, Hawera, New Zealand. William Richard was the son of George Lavell and Elizabeth "Eliza" Maria Twitchin. He was born on 7 Aug 1885 at Windsor, Berkshire, England. He died on 1 Nov 1939 at the age of 54.

They had 2 children: Lucy Jean Lavell and William Albert Lavell.

She died on 13 Apr 1962.

She was buried in 1962 at Kaponga Cemetery, Kaponga, South Taranaki District, Taranaki, New Zealand.
