He married Margaret Jane Paterson on 3 Jan 1889 at Point Road, Addington, Durban, Colony of Natal. Margaret Jane was the daughter of William Paterson and Catherine Lyall. She was born on 31 Oct 1856 at Banff, Banffshire, Scotland. She died on 10 Dec 1919 at Burnside Cottage, Caversham Road, Pinetown, Natal, South Africa at the age of 63.

They had 4 children: Leonard William Allan, Beatrice Margaret Allan, Robert Alexander Allan and Frederick John Allan.

His occupation was Shipwright.

He died on 19 Dec 1903.
