He married Margaret Jane Paterson on 20 Nov 1880 at Addington, Durban, Colony of Natal. Margaret Jane was the daughter of William Paterson and Catherine Lyall. She was born on 31 Oct 1856 at Banff, Banffshire, Scotland. She died on 10 Dec 1919 at Burnside Cottage, Caversham Road, Pinetown, Natal, South Africa at the age of 63.

They had 4 children: Thomas George Crawford, William Paterson Crawford, Mary Eleanor Crawford and John Crawford.

He died on 23 Dec 1886 at Barberton Hospital, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 31.
