Alfred Methley Goulden was born on 28 Oct 1830 at Whitstable, Kent, England.

He was the son of Richard Goulden and Mary Bayne.

He married Mary Elizabeth Whipp on 28 Jan 1850 at St Mary the Less, Lambeth, Surrey, England. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel Whipp and Hannah Blackburn. She was born on 20 May 1821. She died on 5 Feb 1904 at Newcastle, Natal, South Africa at the age of 82.

They had one child: Eliza Ellen Goulden.

He immigrated from Minerva on 4 Jul 1850.

He died on 21 Aug 1883 at West Street, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa at the age of 52.
