He was the son of John Hamish Munro and Alice Elizabeth Thring.

He married Blanche Constance Duke on 8 Apr 1929 at Cape Town, Cape, South Africa. Blanche Constance was the daughter of Robert Austus Duke and Thurza Elizabeth Bull. She was born on 12 Jun 1877 at Cape Town, Cape Colony. She died on 18 Apr 1953 at Garden Nursing Home, Hof Street, Cape Town, Cape, South Africa at the age of 75.

He died on 16 May 1943 at Addington Hospital, Durban, Natal, South Africa at the age of 67.

He was buried in 1943 at Stellawood Cemetery, Durban, Natal, South Africa.
