John Ross Munro was born on 17 Jan 1874.

He was the son of John Hamish Munro and Alice Elizabeth Thring.

He was christened on 1 Mar 1874 at Tongaat, Natal, South Africa.

He married Edith Mary-Ann Smith on 4 May 1898 at All Saints Church, Barberton, Transvaal, South Africa. Edith Mary-Ann was the daughter of William Henry Smith and Margaret Louise Barchfield. She was born on 22 Jan 1879 at Cape Town, South Africa. She died on 14 Dec 1969 at Roodepoort, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 90.

They had 8 children: Donald Reginald Munro, Edna Ross Munro, Olive Letitia Ross Munro, Leslie Ross Munro, Rhona Ross Munro, Ian Ross-Munro, Jocelyn Ross Munro and Alastair Dalkeith Ross-Munro.

He served in Barberton Town Guard between From 1900 to 1901.
