Robert McIntyre was born at Celbridge, County Kildare, Ireland.

He married Mary Low. Mary was the daughter of Richard Low and Ellanor (Ellen) Jefferies. She was born on 11 Jul 1840. She died on 29 Mar 1887 at Johannesburg, Witwatersrand, Transvaal at the age of 46.

They had 2 children: Janey McIntyre and James McIntyre.
