He was the son of Johannes Tobias Rhenius and Engela Bergh.

He was christened on 6 Nov 1718 at Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope.

He married Helena Maria van der Heuvel on 17 Sep 1741 at Stellenbosch, Cape of Good Hope. Helena Maria was the daughter of Nicolaas van der Heuvel and Maria Zegers.

They had one child: Engela Maria Rhenius.
