Richard Bands was born about 1832.

He married Emily Frances Ann McMaster on 7 May 1870 at Seymour, Stockenstroom, Cape of Good Hope. Emily Frances Ann was the daughter of David John James McMaster and Jane Margaret Pinchin Webber. She was born on 23 Jun 1846 at Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. She died on 14 Aug 1935 at Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia at the age of 89.
