William Patrick Thomson was born on 17 Aug 1850 at Glasgow, Scotland.

He married Georgina Clarissa McMaster in 1873 at Kimberley, Northern Cape Province, South Africa. Georgina Clarissa was the daughter of David John James McMaster and Jane Margaret Pinchin Webber. She was born on 11 Aug 1843 at Grahamstown, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. She died on 13 Nov 1926 at Parys, Free State, South Africa at the age of 83.

He died on 21 Aug 1892 at Winburg, Free State, South Africa at the age of 42.
