William Henry Purdon was born on 26 Sep 1808 at Cawnpore, Uttar Pradesh, India.

He was the son of John Purdon and Mary Clifford Harrison.

He married Eliza Tarr. Eliza was the daughter of Thomas Henry Tarr and Ann Radford. She was born on 20 Apr 1817 at Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England. She died on 9 May 1889 at Clumber, Bathurst (nr), Eastern Cape, South Africa at the age of 72.

They had one child: Martha Ann Purdon.

He died on 2 Dec 1894 at Clumber, Bathurst (nr), Eastern Cape, South Africa at the age of 86.
