He was the son of William Ovenston and Mary Birrell.

He married Margaret Smith on 17 Nov 1865 at 28 St. Leonard St., Edinburgh, Scotland. Margaret was the daughter of William Smith and Catherine Sutherland. She was born on 8 Oct 1842 at Greenland, Caithness, Scotland. She died on 2 Aug 1870 at 5 North Newington Place, Scotland at the age of 27.

They had 3 children: Catherine Sutherland Ovenston, Mary Birrell Ovenston and William Ovenston.

He married Margaret Sime.
