He studied medicine in Germany and probably due to the unsettled state of Europe at the beginning of the Napoleonic wars, emigrated to England where he obtained a commission as surgeon in the 60th British Regiment which was ordered to the Cape by the British in 1805. George married Dorothea Catharina Cornelia van Dyk, daughter of Evert van Dyk and Maria Elizabeth Baartman, on 11 Aug 1817 in Lutheran Church, Cape Town, Cape Colony, South Africa. (Dorothea Catharina Cornelia van Dyk was born on 18 Jun 1795, christened on 21 Jun 1795 in Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Colony, South Africa and died on 16 Jan 1867 at the house of Dr L W Glaeser, Worcester, Cape Colony.)
