He was the son of James McDonald.

He married Isabella Erskine (Ella) Diack on 26 Sep 1923 at The Palace Hotel, Peterhead, Scotland. Isabella Erskine (Ella) was the daughter of William Alexander Diack and Isabella Mary Troup. She was born on 13 Oct 1895 at Pictillum, Kemnay, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She died on 8 Aug 1949 at Whitehall Terrace, Aberdeen, Scotland at the age of 53.

They had 2 children: Norman McDonald and Ernest McDonald.
