He married Margaret Ann (Meg) Low in 1922 at Rubislaw, Aberdeen, Scotland. Margaret Ann (Meg) was the daughter of George Low and Annie Macallan. She was born on 22 Nov 1900 at 86 Charlotte Street, Fraserburgh, Aberdeen, Scotland. She died on 29 Dec 1986 at Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 86.

They had 2 children: John Low Bowie and Douglas Alexander Bowie.

He emigrated on 7 Aug 1924, from London to Cape Town, aboard Beltana.

He died on 26 Jul 1963 at 51 St Amant Street, Malvern, Johannesburg Transvaal, South Africa at the age of 66.
