John Allison was born about 1809 at Carlisle, Cumberland, England.

He was the son of James Allison and Ann Maxwell.

He married Maria Petronella De Waal on 6 Jul 1835 at Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa. Maria Petronella was the daughter of Johannes Hendrik De Waal and Rebecca Hopkins. She was born on 16 Mar 1813 at Liverpool, Novia Scotia. She died on 11 Oct 1846 at Stellenbosch, Cape, South Africa at the age of 33.

They had 3 children: Alfred William Allison, Rebecca Allison and John Allison.
