He married Phyllis Mary Catterall on 18 Aug 1915 at Dundee, Natal, South Africa. Phyllis Mary was the daughter of Alfred James Catterall and Jessie Dearlove. She was born on 21 Jul 1894.

They had one child: Ethne Vyvyan Kirtley Smith.
