Norman Macleod Macdonald was born on 13 May 1862 at Benbecula, Outer Hebrides, Invernesshire, Scotland.

He was the son of Hector Macdonald and Flora Macleod.

He married Christina McKenzie on 28 Nov 1898 at St Mary & All Saints, Trentham, Staffordshire, England. Christina was the daughter of David McKenzie and Catherine Munro. She was born on 9 Nov 1871 at J Colm Mills, Inverness, Invernesshire, Scotland. She died on 21 Jan 1902 at University College Hospital, London, England at the age of 30.

They had one child: Christina MacKenzie Macdonald.
