John Frederick Catley was born on 19 Dec 1864 at Makara, Wellington, New Zealand.

He was the son of Zacharia John Catley and Eliza Signal.

He married Edith Rose Daniel on 7 Apr 1890 at Mahakipawa, Pelorus Sound, Marlborough, New Zealand. She was born on 30 Nov 1868 at Kingston, Central Otago, New Zealand. She died on 19 Jun 1962 at the age of 93.

They had 2 children: John Gilbert Catley and Austin Frederick Catley.

He died on 31 Jul 1940 at the age of 75.

He was buried at Manukau Memorial Gardens, Manukau, Auckland, New Zealand.
