He was recorded in the census in 1851 at Hillside, Logie Coldstone, Mar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

He married Isabella McCombie. Isabella was the daughter of Charles McCombie and Hariot Anderson. She was born on 17 Jul 1806 at Tarland and Migvie, Aberdeen, Scotland. She died on 31 Oct 1881 at the age of 75.
