Esther Bowles was born in 1809.

She was the daughter of Richard Bowles and Elizabeth Ambrose.

She married John Openshaw on 4 Jan 1822 at Grahamstown, Albany, Cape, South Africa. John was the son of John Openshaw and Mary Topping. He was born on 6 Dec 1795 at Little Lever, Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire, England. He died on 1 Aug 1830 at Cape Town, Cape Colony at the age of 34.

They had 2 children: John Thomas Openshaw and Esther Elizabeth Openshaw.
