He married Ardina Jane Ridley on 2 Apr 1877 at St Mary's, Richmond, Colony of Natal, Southern Africa. Ardina Jane was the daughter of William Ridley and Elizabeth Wilkinson. She was born on 19 Feb 1856 at Meerut, Utter Pradesh, Bengal Presidency, India. She died on 12 Apr 1943 at Newcastle, Natal, South Africa at the age of 87.

They had one child: George Leonard Patrick Thomson.
